Modesty in Islam
“Two qualities which Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) loves [are] forbearance and modesty.” Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 584
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: “Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is more deserving that you should feel modesty before Him than people.” Sunan Ibn Majah 1920
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Verily Musa (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was a shy and modest man, who would never show anything of his skin out of modesty. Some of the Children of Isra'il annoyed him… This is what is referred to in the Ayah (33:69): 'O you who believe! Be not like those who annoyed Musa (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), but Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) freed him from what they had alleged, and he was honorable before Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).'" The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Modesty (Al-Haya') is a branch of faith." Sunan an-Nasa'i 5006
The Prophet (ﷺ) passed by a man who was admonishing his brother regarding Haya' and was saying, "You are very shy, and I am afraid that might harm you." On that, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Leave him, for Haya' (modesty) is (a part) of faith." Sahih al-Bukhari 6118
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Al-Fuhsh (immodesty) is not present in anything but it mars it, and Al-Haya' (modesty) is not present in anything but it beautifies it." Jami`at-Tirmidhi 1974
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “One of the sayings of the early Prophets which the people have is: If you don't feel ashamed (from Haya'), do whatever you like." Sahih al-Bukhari 6120
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Al-Haya’ (modesty) is from faith, and faith is in Paradise. Obscenity is from rudeness, and rudeness is in the Fire." Jami`at-Tirmidhi 2009
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is characterised by modesty and concealment and loves modesty and concealment.” Mishkat al-Masabih 447
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “[Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ)] commands us to perform Salat, to speak the truth, to observe modesty and to strengthen the ties of kinship.” Riyad as-Salihin 56
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Verily, modesty and faith come together. If one of the two is missing, so is the other.” Shu’ab al-Imān 7211
